We cannot allow the court to remain at an even number, this allows a tie and thus constitutional crisis. The worst thing would be if an election question could not be answered due to a tie.
Referring to Chuck Schumer’s comment: “…this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president”. I simply do not think it would be at all prudent to wait until 2024 to fill this vacancy.
