Opening on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. and running through Nov. 7, the “ABC: Assemblage, Book Art, Collage” exhibition at Southern Utah University’s Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery will showcase those three unique art forms. In addition, seven artworks from the collection of book art at the University of Utah will be displayed in the SUU Gerald R. Sherratt Library in conjunction with “ABC: Assemblage, Book Art, Collage.” Admission to both shows is free and open to the public.
“ABC: Assemblage, Book Art, Collage” is co-curated by book artist Sue Cotter, SUU associate professor of art education Deborah K. Snider, and New York-based collagist Jonathan Talbot, who invited artists from across the United States to share their work in southern Utah.
A number of seminars affiliated with the “ABC: Assemblage, Book Art, Collage” exhibition will be held. Among those are Dr. Matt Weeg’s “Assemblage in Nature,” SUU library’s “What’s Happening to Books?,” Jonathan Talbot’s “Collage: Medium & Metaphor” with Dr. Andrew Marvick, two hands-on letter press workshops with Jessica Gerlach, and Sue Cotter’s “From Book Arts to Book Art.”
All workshops and seminars are free and open to the public. In addition, school tours for the exhibition lead by education docents will include hands-on activities for K-12 students beginning in September and continuing through November.
“ABC: Assemblage, Book Art, Collage” is made possible by major funding from The Friends of the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery. Additional funding is provided by the Utah Division of Arts & Museums, Rainbow Sign & Banner, and the Cedar City RAP (recreation, arts, and parks) Tax.
The “ABC: Assemblage, Book Art, Collage” exhibition will run through Nov. 7. The SUU Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery fall gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 7 p.m. The SUU Gerald R. Sherratt Library exhibition hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 7 a.m. until midnight, Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m., and Sundays from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m.
