Southern Utah University’s Community Education program heads into its fall session with more exciting, fun, and affordable classes. Five new SUU Community Education classes will debut in September along with some of the program’s most popular classes such as Southern Utah Chef.

The five new classes include “Positive Dog Training,” “Women in Business,” “Astronomy with Cedar Breaks National Monument,” the “SUU APEX Guest Lecture and Luncheon Series,” and new culinary classes “Making Jam with Nature Hills Farms” and “Dutch Oven Cooking for Beginners.”

“Positive Dog Training” will be taught by Gail Workman, who has more than 30 years experience training dogs. Class participants will bring their dogs who learn how to walk on a loose leash, sit, stay, wait, lay down, come when called, be controlled at the owner’s side, and leave something alone. Owners will also learn how to deal with nuisance behaviors in a positive way.

For those ready to embark on an entrepreneurial route, Jennie Hendricks will instruct “Women in Business.” Class members will learn how to develop effective strategies in business planning and walk away with a list of resources to help to start or improve a business.

“Astronomy with Cedar Breaks National Monument” is a great option for those who want to explore the outdoors in an educational way. This class is a 40-hour hands-on workshop where community members can learn more about southern Utah’s amazing dark night skies. Classes will be held in an SUU classroom as well as Kolob Canyons, Cedar Breaks, and the Ashcroft Observatory.

Also new this fall for the intellectually-minded, the “SUU APEX Guest Lecture and Luncheon Series” provides class members the opportunity to meet some of the world’s greatest authors right here in Cedar City. Participants will enjoy VIP luncheons and a special book group to discuss the guests’ work.

While culinary classes are not new to SUU Community Education, “Jam Making with Nature Hills Farms” and “Dutch Oven Cooking for Beginners” will be new additions to culinary options. Both of these classes will offer hands-on experience for community members to learn something new.

Along with the new additions to SUU Community Education, some of their most popular classes such as cake decorating, social dance, yoga, and Southern Utah Chef will also return due to high demand. Give the gift of education and sign up a family member or friend to attend a class with you.

“Due to increasing popularity, our classes do fill quickly,” said Jessica Burr, assistant director at SUU Community Education. “We invite community members to sign up as soon as possible to guarantee participation in the classes they want.”

SUU Community Education establishes community partnerships by generating fun, cultural, and educational opportunities for those who love to learn. Subjects including culinary arts, photography, and blogging will be taught by local professionals for the purpose of increasing participant knowledge and developing new skills. Classes begin Sept. 5 and run through the end of November.
