SUU Honor Orchestra Features High School Students from the Region
– By Ashley H Palmer –
Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: Southern Utah University’s Department of Music is hosting the SUU High School Honor Orchestra Concert on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at 4 PM in the Heritage Center Theater. These students will be led by guest conductor, Dr. Robert Baldwin, Director of Orchestral Activities at the University of Utah. This concert is free and open to the public.
High school students from the region will study under Dr. Xun Sun and Dr. Robert Baldwin throughout the day to prepare for the concert. To be a part of the Honor Orchestra, high school students must be nominated by their directors. Through this experience, students have an outstanding opportunity to rehearse and perform high-quality orchestral works with the SUU Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Xun Sun, Orchestra Director at SUU, shares, “I am so excited about the 2021 SUU Honor High School Orchestra! I am especially glad we are hosting the wonderful event with high school students and guest master-conductor Dr. Robert Baldwin. It is going to be a great life experience for all of the participants.”
Dr. Robert Baldwin is Director of Orchestral Activities and a professor of music at the University of Utah. He is also Music Director of the Salt Lake Symphony and conductor of “It’s a Grand Night for Singing,” in Lexington, Kentucky. During his tenure at the University of Utah, the orchestral program has grown dramatically in size and quality, with noted performances at the 2007 CMS and NASM Conferences, the 2003 Utah Arts Festival, the 2005 Utah Music Educators’ Association Conference, and a tour of Austria for the 2006 Mozart Orchestra Festival. He has previously held conducting positions with the University of Kentucky, Lexington Philharmonic, New American Symphony, Northern Arizona University, and Flagstaff Symphony orchestras.
Dr. Robert Baldwin, the guest conductor, says, “I am truly looking forward to making music with the students of the SUU High School Honor Orchestra on September 18. Coming back together to play some great string repertoire will be important for their musical development and it is also a healing activity for the entire community. It is time we returned to live music!”
Experience the excitement of a live orchestra performance on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at 4:00 p.m. in the Heritage Center Theater. For more information about the Department of Music at SUU, please visit www.suu.edu/pva/music.
