SUU Jazz Ensemble performs Benny Golson tribute concert

By Ashley Pollock

The SUU Jazz Band will bring to life the music of Benny Golson Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Heritage Center Theater. Admission to this concert is free and open to the public.

“Our jazz band concert is a Benny Golson tribute, featuring tunes such as ‘Whisper Not’, ‘Little Karin’, ‘Stablemates’, and ‘Straw Boss,’” said Dr. Adam Lambert, Director of Bands at SUU. “Also programmed is Count Basie’s ‘Magic Flea’, the classic tune ‘On Green Dolphin Street,’ and Bob Mintzer’s funk/rock tune titled ‘Computer.’”

Benny Golson is the only living jazz artist to have written eight standards for jazz repertoire. These jazz standards have found their way into countless recordings internationally over the years and are still being recorded. He has recorded over 30 albums for many recording companies in the United States and Europe under his own name and innumerable ones with other major artists. A prodigious writer, Golson has written well over 300 compositions.

“I’m way excited to be here at SUU and especially playing with the SUU Jazz Ensemble,” said Drew Holland, freshman music performance major. “No place I’d rather be!”

The SUU Jazz Band and jazz combos are open to all students by audition. Students prepare and perform jazz music through ensemble and improvisational performance. Performances include a feature performance with the annual SUU High School Jazz Festival featuring nationally and internationally recognized guest artists, an annual Swing Dance for the university and local community, and competing at the Reno Jazz Festival.
