Ensembles from Southern Utah University’s music department will perform in “Songs of the Spirit, A Spring Concert.” Works from the classical repertoire will be sung by SUU choirs with orchestral accompaniment. The concert is scheduled for April 1 at Cedar City’s Heritage Center Theater at 7:30 p.m.
Featuring SUU’s Concert Choir, Women’s Choir, and Opus Chamber Choir, the evening’s program includes a performance of Franz Schubert’s Mass No. 2 in G Major. Originally composed in 1815, Schubert’s Mass No. 2 is the best known of his three shorter mass compositions and was composed in less than a week. It premiered the year after Schubert’s first mass had been successfully performed in the composer’s home parish. The second mass was originally more modestly scored than the first, requiring only a string orchestra and organ in addition to the vocal soloists and choir. The 22-minute piece consists of six movements: “Kyrie,” “Gloria,” “Credo,” “Sanctus,” “Benedictus,” and “Angus Dei.”
Conducted by Dr. Xun Sun, the SUU Symphony Orchestra will perform Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No.1 in C Minor. Brahms’ first symphony took nearly 20 years to compose. Observed as one of the greatest symphonies in the Austro-German tradition, it was first performed in 1876.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for alumni, and $5 for youth. SUU faculty, staff, and students are admitted free with a valid ID. For more information on SUU’s College of Performing and Visual Arts’ events, visit suu.edu/pva/arts.
