On Saturday, Jan. 9, the most accomplished high school instrumental students from across the tri-state area will collaborate with SUU’s Wind Symphony under the direction of SUU’s director of bands, Dr. Adam Lambert. “In Flight: SUU’s High School Honor Band Concert 2016” will be performed at 6 p.m. at Cedar City’s Heritage Center Theater. The concert is free and open to the public.
Each year, SUU’s High School Honor Band Concert showcases gifted student musicians from high school concert bands in Utah, Arizona, and Nevada. These student performers are selected through an audition process by SUU’s music faculty. The chosen students participate in two days of rehearsals and activities culminating in a concert at the end of the second day that also features the SUU Wind Symphony.
This year’s concert includes Samuel Hazo’s “In Flight,” from which the performance takes its title. Other compositions on the evening’s bill are Ralph Vaughan Williams’s “English Folksong Suite,” Alfred Reed’s “A Festival Prelude,” and Frank Ticheli’s “Rest.”
“This special collaboration has members of SUU Wind Symphony share their time and expertise with these skilled high school musicians,” said Lambert. “This joint collaborative process evolves to produce a jubilant evening of music. As a music educator, this event remains a favorite of mine and audiences as well.”
