The premise of Sweeney Todd is as remarkably simple as it is eerily dark.  Sweeney Todd, one of Stephen Sondheim’s classical masterpieces, is most famous for its ominous use of theatrically intricate minor chords and musical arrangements, which are often difficult for the artists who dare to deliver and perform.

Revenge is a familiar driving force in many tales, and this story, not for the faint of heart mind you, will not disappoint.

Upon his escape from prison, Benjamin Barker, who calls himself Todd, is driven to exact his revenge on the wicked Judge who unjustly incarcerated him. Turpin, a vile and corrupt judge, is driven by lust and his desires for Barker’s wife, who later poisons herself after he defiles her. He even adopts Barker’s daughter Johanna, now a teenager, and if that is not bad enough, the Judge intends to marry her.

This dark yarn finds Todd, a career barber, consumed by his own lust for revenge, turning his targets into victims to be devoured; literally.

As he starts down this vengeful path, no one is safe who gets in his way. Then, while shaving the Judge, he is distracted from his chance to kill him, sending him into a spiraling murderous spree as the dark veil of revenge turns inward, consuming him along with his victims.

As the dark plot continues to twist and turn, it gnaws its way into the audience, leaving the observers to twist and squirm at the hollow version of the man who might have been.
