“The Taffetas” brings ‘50s fabulousness to Kayenta

By Merrie Campbell-Lee

It was the time of Ed Sullivan, The Hit Parade, big hair, sweater sets, poodle skirts, and the local malt shop. Many of us remember our parents singing along with Rick Lewis’ “The Taffetas” music. Those pop chart hits got the toes tapping, and every so often, some swing dancing in the kitchen. The Center for the Arts at Kayenta invites you to embrace those memories and get those toes tapping again May 30–June 1 at 7:30 p.m. and June 1 at 2 p.m.

Even in the 21st Century, we can return to this feel-good period with “The Taffetas,” the tightest four-part harmonies you’ve ever heard, along with duets and solos from four vocal powerhouses. Each member brings her own brand of humor and genuine likeability to the stage. Their performance takes us on a musical journey through the fabulous ‘50s, arguably the most feel-good music period ever.

“The Taffetas” pays tribute to the vocal stylings of the Fontaine Sisters, the McGuire Sisters, and the Chordettes. These include favorites like “Mr. Sandman,” “You Belong to Me,” “Where the Boys Are,” “Johnny Angel,” and much, much more: About 40 songs are packed into the show.

McKenzie Morgan, Janessa Judkins, Makayla Nelson, and Grace Wells play the leading roles as “The Taffetas.” The show is directed by Kyle Myrick with musical direction by Grace Palfreyman and choreography and costuming by Sammy Myrick.

Tickets are $25 ($10 for students) and can be purchased online via kayentaarts.com or by calling (435) 674-2787.
