WASHINGTON COUNTY, Utah — Over the span of just two days, Washington County Search and Rescue teams responded to three separate emergencies involving a total of 16 individuals who found themselves in peril after depleting their water supplies while hiking in Southern Utah’s rugged terrain.
The incidents underscore the critical importance of proper preparation and hydration, especially as temperatures soar in the region.
A Series of Rescues
On Wednesday evening, an adult and two children became lost near the Simon Gulch area of Zion National Park. With minimal water and supplies, their situation prompted the deployment of a Utah Highway Patrol helicopter, which airlifted the trio to safety.
The following afternoon, rescue teams were dispatched to the Subway near Left Fork Trailhead, where a man in his mid-40s was experiencing heat-related symptoms after running out of water. He was located approximately half a mile from the trailhead and, after receiving fluids, was able to walk to an ambulance but declined further medical transport.
Just over an hour later, a group of 12 teenagers reported that they had exhausted their water supplies while hiking the Cottonwood Trail in the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. Three members of the group were suffering from severe heat-related symptoms and were evacuated by helicopter, while the remaining hikers were guided back to the trailhead by rescue personnel.
Expert Advice
Matthew Fink, public affairs specialist at Zion National Park, emphasized the recurring issue of inadequate preparation among hikers.
“Common threads that link all of our search and rescues is folks not necessarily being prepared, not knowing what they’re getting into, not bringing their water, not bringing enough water or enough food,” Fink stated.
He advises hikers to carry at least 0.5 to 1 liter of water per hour of hiking, adjusting for higher altitudes and strenuous activity levels.
Stay Safe on the Trails
As summer temperatures climb, it’s imperative for outdoor enthusiasts to plan meticulously before embarking on hikes. This includes researching trail conditions, informing someone of your plans, and ensuring you have adequate supplies, particularly water.
