Trail Hero promises five action-packed days for hundreds of off-roading enthusiasts

By David Cordero

Five sensational days of festivities, including guided trail rides and exhibitions, are expected to bring hundreds of off-roading enthusiasts together for the annual Trail Hero event, set for Oct. 2–6 at Sand Hollow State Park.

“Trail Hero offers so much to so many different types of people,” said Rich Klein, president of Trail Hero. “We have specialized access for people with special needs, veterans, and regular Jeep and Toyota trail vehicles. But when our participants are done with their day, they can watch some of the most talented racers in the world compete for major purse money, and the spectating is free to all.”

In its fourth year, Trail Hero includes rides to Toquerville Falls, Arrowhead trail in Sand Hollow State Park, and many other trails throughout Washington County. The event begins 2 p.m. Oct. 2 with a charity golf tournament at Sand Hollow Resort, followed by the Trail Hero kickoff. Between Oct. 3 and 6, trail rides will begin at various times — some as early as 6:30 a.m. — and conclude before 2 p.m. ahead of daily scheduled exhibitions. The exhibitions will be located across Sand Hollow Road from the Sand Hollow State Park tunnel:

—Oct. 2 at 2 p.m.: Yokohama Golf Tournament at Sand Hollow Resort.

—Oct. 3 at 2 p.m.: LaserNut Rock Race.

—Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.: World Extreme rock crawling competition, “Tough Country Challenge Bounty Hill,” and the “GenRight Beach Bash” with a slip-n-slide into Sand Hollow Reservoir.

—Oct. 5 at 2 p.m.: “Fab Fours Trail Breaker.”

—Oct. 6 at 2 p.m.: “Show N Shine” and an off-road expo featuring manufacturers from around the country. The exhibitions Oct. 6 will be at the Hurricane City Leisure and Recreation Center, located at 63 S 100 W.

Klein said more than 600 guided trail riders and approximately 1,600 registered users are set to participate. Nearly 90 percent of participants from outside Utah, and the out-of-town visitors typically stay in the area for five or six days, Klein added.

Trail Hero aims to provide rock sports entertainment from every angle of the industry so that after their trail rides are completed, participants will have plenty to keep themselves occupied.

“Our goal at Trail Hero is to give back to the community, to show that people need motorized access to experience the great outdoors,” Klein said. “Motorized access gives legs to those that have none, shelter to those that need it and mobility like no other can provide.”

The special needs access trail and the veterans access trail are free for those who fall into either category.
