African art reflects history, culture, and beliefs. Africa inspired artists long before recorded history. Many of today’s artists have reached regional and international fame. It seems that Africa gets into the hearts of people everywhere. The beauty and the people have inspired three artists who have had A Brush with Africa. Birgit Wudenka McMullen, living in Cedar City Utah, served in the Peace Corps for three years and deeply misses Malawi and all her friends there. Sage Gallagher, of St. George, Utah, has a passion to help villagers in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo to start small businesses and to build an orphanage. Currently she is getting to know the villagers by painting their portraits. Ruth Hewlett-Pope, accompanied her husband Louis Pope, to Africa on humanitarian projects. Ruth was provided a lot of time to paint and observe the beauty and hardworking people of Africa.
Ruth shares her thoughts, “It is my belief that there is energy and life in all the creations of earth and that there is light filling the earth from a Heavenly source. In my travels to Kenya, Africa I have learned to love and respect the native people. I love trying to capture the feel and emotion of their existence.”
Kathy Cieslewicz, Curator and Director of the museum, shares, “This is a beautiful show, and we are so happy to have the opportunity of exhibiting this art. As a museum, we are working on building a collection of art from diverse artists to reflect the diversity on our campus.”
The Brush and Lens exhibit featured in Foyer combines two different mediums to depict the same subject. Stephen Sandau (photography) and Deena Millecam (watercolor) are exhibiting a unique artistic experience.
The Museum is open Monday to Friday from 9 AM until 5 PM and is closed on weekends and holidays. Admission is free.
