If you’ve ever thought about trying hunting or trapping in Southern Utah, this fall may be your season. But before heading out into the field, first-timers need to complete either a hunter education course or enroll in Utah’s Trial Hunting Program. And for those curious about trapping, there’s a separate furharvester education course available too.

With big game hunts just around the corner and over-the-counter elk permits going on sale July 8, July and August are prime months to complete certification—especially before classes fill up.“Hunting is a great way to obtain your own local meat while getting outdoors and exploring our beautiful state,” said RaLynne Takeda, Hunter Education Program Manager for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. “It’s also a powerful way to support conservation and build family traditions.”

Who Needs Hunter Education?

Anyone born after Dec. 31, 1965 is required to either take a hunter education course or enroll in the Trial Hunting Program to hunt in Utah.

How Hunter Education Works

You can choose between a traditional in-person course or an online version followed by a required field day. Both formats cover firearm safety, hunter ethics, and outdoor responsibility.

  • Step 1: Purchase a hunter education registration certificate ($12 for residents, $17 for nonresidents).

  • Step 2: Choose a course—either online (self-paced, $25) or in-person with an instructor.

  • Step 3: Attend the mandatory field day, which includes a hands-on skills review and live-fire exercise.

If your child is taking the course online, parents are encouraged to help guide them through the material.

Try Hunting Without a Full Course

The Trial Hunting Program lets anyone age 12 or older hunt under the supervision of a licensed adult (21+), without needing to complete hunter education first. Participants need:

  • A valid hunting license and the appropriate permit

  • To complete a short online orientation

  • To be accompanied by a licensed hunter at all times

Trial hunters can hunt small game, upland game, waterfowl, and even big game species like deer and elk.

Getting Into Trapping: The Furharvester Course

To trap wildlife in Utah, anyone born after Dec. 31, 1984 must complete a Furharvester Education Course, which includes an online class and field day. Topics include:

  • Safe and ethical trapping practices

  • Releasing non-target animals

  • Firearm safety and wildlife management

The registration certificate costs $7. After completing the online portion, participants must register for an in-person field day and bring their proof of course completion.

Don’t Wait to Enroll

Fall hunts fill quickly, and spots for certification classes are limited. Visit the Utah DWR website for more details, course options, and registration links.
