The rain started coming down in the St. George area last night, and so far today Mother Nature has deposited 0.52 inches of rain in the downtown St. George area, according to the CEMP monitoring station at Dixie State University.

Snowfall has been a welcome boon at local ski resorts, with 6 inches of snow recorded in Brian Head in the past 24 hours. Highway 143 remains open from Parowan to Brian Head, but chains or four-wheel drive vehicles are required due to the snow conditions.

Winter storm warnings have been extended for southwest and south central Utah. A winter weather advisory released yesterday by the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City has been extended through 3 p.m. today for Beaver, Cedar City, Milford, Kanab and Escalante. New snowfall of 1 to 3 inches is expected in these areas, with less reportedly expected near Kanab. Snow mixed with rain is expected to continue below 5,000 feet through midday today. Winter driving conditions will continue along I-15 and US-89 in these areas. Drivers are being admonished to use caution and be prepared for snow-covered roads.

Updated road condition information is available from UDOT by calling 866-511-8824, dialing 511 or visit www.udottraffic.utah.gov/roadweatherforecast.aspx.
