The Center for The Arts at Kayenta Has A Serious Lineup Just for You!
Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Wolf – Final Two Nights!
Finishing its run at Center For the Arts at Kayenta (CFAK) is Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (March 31-April 3), which will be the first professional regional theater production in this area of this most acclaimed 1962 play by Edward Albee. It stars Jan Broberg, Dean Jones, Christopher Whiteside, and Sceri Sioux Ivers. This Pulitzer Prize-winning play touches on mature themes such as mental illness, alcoholism, marriage relationships, and the deep wounds that unmet expectations and desires create. There is profanity, smoking (non-toxic herbal cigarettes are used), alcohol, sensuality, and difficult subject matters in the text. Clarence Gilyard (Matlock, Walker Texas Ranger, Die Hard, UNLV Professor of film and Theater) directed this all-star cast. Those with a hunger for deep theatrical diversity will find this mature play a feast for the artistic soul. Based on characters from author Edward Albee’s own life (his parents and others), he writes from his experience as a neglected adopted child where alcoholism, abuse, and fear were a daily part of his growing up experience. The play is sponsored generously by the distinguished team at Desert Concepts: home design, build, & remodel.
St. George’s First Jazz Club, Choir, and the 3 Redneck Tenors; Just To Name A Few!
Following up on the hit, March 13–14 series A Night at the Beluga: St. George’s First Jazz Club, the Lorraine Boccardo Theater at CFAK will once again be transformed into prohibition-era speakeasy The Beluga, complete with professional jazz musicians to accompany your drinks and food (sold separately) for that “New York, New York” kind of evening (April 8-10, 7:30 PM). VIP tickets get you and your group elevated above the crowd on luxury seating and access to wait-staff. Regular ground floor tables seat 2-6, and VIP sections can fit four people, so buying two VIP tickets secures a secluded platform for up to eight VIP guests. This event is generously sponsored by Sterling Capital Investment Fund and The Mayaway.
At 2 PM on April 10th, the St. George Chamber Singers will perform gorgeous, selected works on the outdoor Walton Commons at the Center, enhanced for patrons by the same surround-sound setup featured last Fall at the Kurt Bestor and Cello Society concerts. Founded in 2015, the St. George Chamber Singers is comprised of thirty-two choral artists committed to excellence in the performance of vocal chamber music. Singing with increasing levels of tonal richness, expressive intensity, and compelling collective artistry, the SGCS is setting new standards of choral virtuosity and musicianship in the Desert Southwest. The Chamber Singers were invited to perform at the state American Choral Director’s Convention, Utah Sings! on October 23rd, 2020.
The 3 Redneck Tenors will also debut their new show “Country, Gospel, Broadway, and COVID from a Hillbillies’ Point of View” in April at Kayenta. What on Earth is a redneck tenor? Someone once described them like this: If Larry the Cable Guy, Il Divo, and Mrs. Doubtfire had triplets together, they would likely be the 3 Redneck Tenors. Set to hit the stage the fourth Friday through Sunday in April, they will bring an array of songs from all categories; gospel, country, Broadway, pop, and even classical. This “weirdly awesome blend of crooning, country and comedy” wowed judges on 2015’s “America’s Got Talent,” where they were finalists with their act “Opera in Blue Jeans & Tuxedos.”
