On Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m., the Vegetarian Society of Utah presents “Getting Started: Plant Perfection Foods, Making Plant-Based Eating Easier” by William Harris, MD. This DVD presentation will take place at the St. George Community Building, 245 N. 200 West, St. George. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.
Documented benefits of a pure vegetarian (vegan) lifestyle include permanent reduction in weight, blood pressure, serum cholesterol and blood sugar, as well as risk reduction for cardiovascular disease and half a dozen common forms of cancer. Allergies, arthritis and asthma also respond to vegan nutrition, which means no meat, fish, chicken, dairy, eggs or even honey.
In his presentation, Dr. Harris discusses the changes and simplifications he has made to www.vsh.org/getting_started.htm, the introductory page he wrote for the Vegetarian Society Web site many years ago. With the explosion of dependable vegan Web sites and restaurants, the diet has become easier and the choices far greater. Working from PowerPoint reference slides, he will take questions from the audience on a wide spectrum of diet-related issues.
Born in 1930, a vegetarian since 1950 and vegan since 1964, William Harris, M.D. is a founding and current director of the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii. Prior to his retirement, he was an emergency physician and director of the Kaiser Permanente Vegetarian Lifestyle Clinic. He received his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco in 1963 and is the author of “The Scientific Basis of Vegetarianism,” now online free at www.vegsource.com/harris/book_contents.htm.
At age 83, Dr. Harris continues to lead a very physically active life.
