The West Rim Trail in Zion National Park will be affected by upcoming trail delays and trail closures. The trail closures will be in place from Sept. 21 to Oct. 15 and will affect portions of the West Rim Trail while Zion National Park trail crews work on two bridges on the trail.
Completed in 1926, the West Rim Trail connects the floor of Zion Canyon to the Kolob Terrace. This popular trail is considered strenuous, but it is well maintained. However, as part of this maintenance, periodic work is necessary, including the upcoming bridge work. Due to the location of the bridges on the trail, some of the trail closures will be intermittent but will affect the section of the trail needed to reach the popular Angels Landing. Day hikers as well as those wanting to obtain wilderness permits for both overnight camping and those who wish to do canyoneering will be affected.
The work between Sept. 21-24 and Sept. 28-Oct. 1 will be between Scout’s Lookout and Campsite 1 on the West Rim Trail. There could be as much as a two-hour delay. The work on these days will not affect people hiking between The Grotto shuttle stop and Angels Landing. However, work on the trail and bridges on October 5-8 and October 12-15 will be on the bridge located halfway between Scout’s Lookout and the Grotto Trail trailhead. During this phase of work, the trails will be completely closed. The trail closures will start on Sunday at 11 p.m. and run until Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. Angels Landing from the Grotto Shuttle Stop will be closed during these times and dates. If planning to access canyons or campsites from the West Rim Trail in Zion National Park, the Lava Point Trail head will be required. The trail will be open from Thursday, October 8 at 5:30 p.m. to Sunday, October 11 at 11:00 p.m. For more information, visit www.nps.gov/zion/index.htm.
