The first of only three socials hosted annually by the Cedar City Arts Council is coming soon. A free event for those who enjoy art, music, and poetry is slated for Monday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. in the Heritage Center upstairs conference center, 105 N. 100 E. in Cedar City. The Cedar City Arts Council sponsors Networking Socials three times per year as community events to share the work of artists and offer opportunities to increase collaboration. The easiest entrance to the upstairs Heritage Center venue is from the second level of the parking terrace.

Wilhelm performs jazz in the style of Stephane Grappelli. The group is led by violinist Heather Wilhelm with vocalist Olivia Sham.  The band’s rhythm section includes Mason Cottam and Ryan Durfee.  They have performed at numerous community events from the Home Show and Tour of Utah, to the CCAC Art Walk. “While gypsy jazz is our primary focus, we incorporate other styles into our sound that inspire us such as jazz, fiddle, bossa nova, western swing, and even a little rock and pop,” said Durfee.  A link for their 2014 Groovefest performance is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCmxNzzpY6Y

Wilhelm is a recipient of a CCAC Artist Grant. These grants are awarded twice a year and the next deadline is Feb. 28. More information at http://www.cedarcityartscouncil.org/grant. This cycle has $4000.00 to award and up to $500.00 may be awarded to an applicant.  Both individuals and organizations may apply.

Artisan’s Gallery will be the featured arts organization at the Social. Several of the artists who exhibit and sell their creations at the popular Cedar City gallery will exhibit their work. “We have a wide selection of paintings, photographs, ceramics, sculptures, jewelry, metal work, stained glass and much more,” said Steve Yates, Gallery Director.

DaKishia Reid expresses herself through a variety of artistic endeavors including dance, painting, and spoken word poetry. She will present two poetic pieces the night of the Social, her work exploring “the merging magic of personal experience and cultural stories laid out long before we arrived to the doorstep of our lives.” Her work has been published in several magazines, and won recognition in North Carolina, Colorado, and New Mexico.”

A selection of refreshments will be provided by Pastry Pub. Denise Purvis, Steve Yates, and Danny Stewart direct the networking socials.  More information on the CCAC at http://cedarcityartscouncil.org/.  This event is free and the public is invited.
