Fathom Events hosts special screenings of “The Breakfast Club” for 30th anniversary

Breakfast Club anniverary

Written by Adam Mast

I’m sitting in a dark theater and as the Universal Pictures logo comes into view, that unforgettable Simple Minds anthem “Don’t You Forget About Me” dominates the audio track. As this infectious rock tune continues, the names Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy fade in and out on screen. Following a, “Written and Directed by John Hughes,” title card, a prophetic quote fills the frame:

“…And these children that you spit on as they try to change their worlds are immune to your consultations. They’re quite aware of what they’re going through…” David Bowie

When talking about great film-makers who made an impact during the 80’s, John Hughes’ name is quite often left out of the discussion. A shame because he’s certainly one of the brightest film-makers to come out of that particular decade. No one captured the spirit of teen angst quite like the great John Hughes.

While “Sixteen Candles” put this incredible talent on the directorial map, “The Breakfast Club” has always been the  Hughes film that spoke to me most. And that’s saying a lot given that this is the same man who wrote, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles”, “Uncle Buck”, “Pretty in Pink”, “Some Kind of Wonderful”, “Vacation”, “Christmas Vacation”, and “Home Alone.”

It’s hard to believe that “The Breakfast Club” is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. It seems like it was just yesterday that I was spending Saturday detention with Claire, John, Andrew, Brian, and Allison; and now here we are, 30 years later.

In celebration of this milestone, Fathom Events is holding two special theatrical screenings of “The Breakfast Club”  in select theaters nationwide. Mark your calendars. The dates are March 26 and 31. It should be noted that the film has been digitally  remastered for its upcoming 30th anniversary DVD and Blu-Ray release. I don’t know about you, but the very idea of getting to experience a monumentally awesome digitally remastered “Breakfast Club”  soundtrack in the theater again has me positively giddy with excitement. What’s more, these exclusive screenings will include a special featurette filled with cast and crew interviews.

I love, love, love “The Breakfast Club”! It was, quite simply, a vital part of my teen experience. It’s a movie I’ll never forget. In fact, I love this film so much that you can bet I’ll be taking in one of these special screenings. You should too!

Adam Mast
Adam Mast's love affair with the movies began at the ripe age of 6 after his parents took him to see a little film called Jaws at a drive-in theater in Northern California. From that moment, he was hooked. Mast began his epic stint as a film critic with The Independent back in May of 1996. At the time, the publication was still in its infancy and known as the Revolution. Through the years, Mast would go on to write for Zboneman.com before co-founding the entertainment site, Cinemast.net. His love of storytelling would also lead him to aid in the creation of the film-centric 501(C)(3) nonprofit, Film and Media Alliance of Southern Utah (FMASU)--An organization primarily known for championing storytellers both locally and worldwide by way of various film-related events held throughout the year, including The Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge, Desertscape International Film Festival, HorrorFest International, and A Merry Movie Christmas. His love of cinema and the arts in general knows no bounds. Mast currently resides in St. George, UT with his lovely (and undeniably supportive) wife Tonja and their four amazing children, McKenzie, Matthew, McKian, and Mason.
