George First Friday Streetfest features L.A. band

George First Friday Streetfest expands, hosts parade preview and L.A. bands

Written by George Scott

Building on the success of the inaugural event, George First Friday Streetfest promises to be back downtown—bigger and better in July. George Streetfest on Main will expand onto Tabernacle Street between the roundabout and 100 East, and the Zion Brewing Company Jazz Garden will expand to fill the full courtyard at Ancestor Square. Estimated attendance in June was 2,500, and event organizers have been working to expand the event to accommodate all who wish to attend.

“We are thrilled at the community’s reception and support of this event,” said Amy Thorpe, manager of George Streetfest on Main’s jazz garden, who adds that farmer’s market vendors who were originally located in the courtyard will now join the street market on Main and Tabernacle Streets, offering room for bistro tables, chairs, new food options, and more serving areas in the jazz garden.

In an effort to further expand George Streetfest, a scholarship has been established. The scholarship offers street accommodations each month, including tent and vendor fees, to two artists wishing to promote their work. Local artists and performers interested in applying for the Supporting Artists with Vision event scholarship, provided by Richens Eye Center, should call (435) 773-0781.

George Streetfest on Main will work in conjunction with St. George’s Independence Day celebration hosting the Parade Float Preview Friday, July 3, from 6 to 10 p.m. With first Friday falling the day before July 4, residents will experience back-to-back celebrations starting with George Streetfest Friday evening and moving to Vernon Worthen Park all day Saturday.

Music is a huge part of the event each month with live concerts on Main Street. The July 3 event will feature opening act and local musician Kaitlin Sevy and local band Morning Pretty. Headline guest bands from Los Angeles will follow, including Sego and Golden Sun.
