In June, “Ghostbusters” returns to theaters for two days only! Fathom Events has joined forces with Sony Pictures to bring Ivan Reitman’s original paranormal comedy classic back to the big screen. The screening will include a sneak peak at next month’s Paul Feig-directed reboot.

Ghostbusters returns to theatersFeig’s film has been met with a shit ton of opposition even though not many people have actually seen it, with exception of a couple of test screening audiences and a few insiders (including Dan Aykroyd who unsurprisingly praised the film). A bulk of that resounding disapproval hit a fever pitch when the first trailer dropped several weeks back. Admittedly, I didn’t think the trailer was that bad. True, many of the jokes in the clip fell flat, and no one wants an unfunny “Ghostbusters” movie. But visually, it looks great. At the end of the day, I’m willing to give Feig the benefit of the doubt, particularly given his exemplary track record (“Bridesmaids,” “The Heat,” and “Spy” make him three for three). With Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, Chris Hemsworth, and actors from the original film, it’s clear that he’s assembled quite a great cast, too.

Ghostbusters returns to theatersHaving said that, it’s interesting that Sony would re-release the original “Ghostbusters” given Feig’s insistence that his film is a straight-up reboot (one of the many things many “Ghostbusters” purists appear to be so upset about). You’d think the studio and the filmmakers behind the upcoming film would want to put some distance between it and the original in the name of damage control, but you know what? It’s all irrelevant. Why? Because no matter how the reboot turns out, we now have another opportunity to see the original “Ghostbusters” on the big screen again, and I’ll take it! The summer of 1984 was a banner season for movies (“Gremlins,” “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” etc.)  and “Ghostbusters” was right there at the top of the list.

Back to the reboot, momentarily. I was opposed to the very idea of it (or a sequel for that matter) for years, but when Feig jumped on board, the purist in me softened. True, the trailers don’t suggest that this movie is going to catch “lightning in a bottle.” But neither did “Ghostbusters II,” and that film wasn’t forced to weather half the shit storm Feig’s film is trying to navigate through. Again, whatever fate might befall Feig’s movie (I’m holding out hope that it will prove the naysayers wrong), we’ll always have the original “Ghostbusters” to snuggle up to. And now we can be reminded of its comic genius and experience it the way it was meant to be experienced: on the big screen with a packed house full of adoring fans.

The original “Ghostbusters” will be in theaters June 8 and 12! For theater listings, showtimes, and ticket information, click here.

“Ghostbusters” will be playing theaters throughout the state of Utah including Megaplex’s Pineview Stadium 10 in St. George.
