The Springdale Elementary School Writing Competition revealed student entries March 28 and has invited public participation in voting for a People’s Choice Award. Votes can be cast at the SES Writing Contest event on the Historic Rockville Bridge’s Facebook page by “liking” an essay or poem between noon April 15 and noon April 30.

For nearly three weeks, the 42 students of Springdale Elementary School have been working on essays and poems about the Historic Rockville Bridge. Rockville resident Joyce Hartless presented a slide show on March 2 to the students about the bridge and its significance as the last surviving Parker through-truss bridge in the state of Utah. The slides showed the bridge’s historic beginnings as well as its value today as the only public Virgin River crossing for 14.5 miles, connecting Rockville’s Main Street to Gooseberry Mesa, Smithsonian Butte, and Grafton.

The children were invited to write essays and poems about the bridge.

“The children have been putting their best effort into this project,” said principal Snodgress. “Many of them have visited the bridge with their families.”

A panel of local writing enthusiasts, including language arts educators, reporters, and authors, will select 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners for each grade level. Finalists’ compositions will be posted to the Historic Rockville Bridge’s Facebook page. The winner will be awarded a Kindle Fire.

Questions can be directed to Joyce Hartless at (435) 772-7802.
