Southern Utah University’s art and design department and Southern Utah Museum of Art will present a show featuring works of art by current faculty and past students titled “IMPACT: An Exhibition of SUU Art & Design Faculty and Alumni.” There will be an opening reception for the show Jan. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the museum. On Jan. 22 at 4 p.m., guests can learn more about the art in the exhibition during a gallery talk. Select presenting faculty members will lead a guided tour that will provide guests with insight on the displayed pieces. Both events are free and open to the public.

“IMPACT is an exhibition featuring the work of SUU art and design faculty and former students who they have mentored,” said Jeffrey Hanson, chair of the art and design department and associate professor of graphic design at SUU. “For the 20th anniversary of the College of Performing and Visual Arts, we thought it fitting to highlight some of the amazing alumni who have gone on to be art and design professionals alongside the faculty who helped get them started. The work is stunning in its breadth and creativity. I hope you’ll look for visual influences that connect teachers and students through aesthetics, motif, and style as we celebrate the impact professors have on their students and vice versa.”

Commemorating the 20th anniversary of the College of Performing and Visual Arts at SUU, this unique exhibition brings together the world of mentor and mentee.

“The relationship between artists and the people who taught them can be a powerful one,” said Rheana Reeves, associate chair of the art and design department and associate professor of photography at SUU. “We realize that the instruction given by our teachers during our relatively brief careers as students continues to expand within us as we age and mature, personally and professionally. We realize that the learning they inspired is a chain-reaction process that develops across our lifetime. All of us who have been students carry forward our professors’ legacy in one form or another. And those who are or have been teachers bear witness to the potency of studenthood.”

The community will also have the opportunity to learn from select art and design faculty members through a new program called Faculty Focus held on Tuesdays in February. Attendees of the workshop series will be able to experience hands-on learning in a variety of media represented in the exhibition including watercolor, ceramics, photography, and letterpress. Tickets for the workshops are available on Eventbrite.

“We are thrilled to present this opportunity for guests to learn from our skilled and talented faculty members,” said Jessica Farling, SUMA director and curator. “This workshop series will give attendees a hands-on experience to learn about and create in artforms that are showcased in the current exhibition.”

“IMPACT: An Exhibition of SUU Art & Design Faculty and Alumni” will remain on display through March 15 at SUMA. The museum is now open Mondays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, please visit suu.edu/suma.
