Through a partnership with Southern Utah University, Community Presbyterian Church, and AmeriCorps VISTA, a free Summer Lunch Program will be offered daily in Cedar City and Enoch for children from low-income families starting May 31.

The Summer Lunch Program is funded through the USDA Summer Food Service Program, which plans to serve more than 200 million free meals to children 18 and under across the country. Volunteers from SUU and members of Community Presbyterian Church will work to prepare and serve lunches in the area through mid-August.

Rebekah Schaff, AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer, says that she is excited for the Summer Lunch Program to begin.

“Through this program we get to help feed children, meet community members, and promote healthy activities,” she said.

According to Schaff, the purpose of this daily event is to provide nutritional meals for those individuals who would normally receive meals from the National School Lunch Program during the academic year. Meals are free to all children under the age of 18. Parents may purchase a lunch for a reduced cost of $2 per plate. Meals will be served Mondays through Fridays starting May 31 in the following locations:

—Cedar City Main Street Park, 303 N 100 E, 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

—Enoch Liberty Park, 27 W Midvalley Road, noon–1 p.m.

—Enoch Garden Park, 646 E. Blue Sky Dr., noon–1 p.m.

Past lunch items have included turkey sandwiches, bean and cheese burritos, chef salads, turkey wraps, and tuna sandwiches along with a fruit or vegetable item and milk. You can find updated menu items on the program’s Facebook page.
