Sunset on the Square finished off its seventh season on Friday night, Aug 28, at Town Square Park in Historic Downtown St. George with its annual Chamber night. This free family-friendly event is sponsored by the City of St. George in partnership with Write it Up!, and has taken place twice a month throughout the summer.

In addition to the usual food, games, and activities, attendees were treated to some extra festivities for the closing event. Carlie Wall, a local musician, entertained the crowd as they waited for the sun to set. Young and old alike enjoyed her renditions of both original and classic songs.

Additionally, the “Breaking the Cycles” team also made an appearance at Town Square. Carol Hollowell, the executive director for Switchpoint Community Resource Center, and her husband, Bob, are raising awareness about homelessness with a cross-country bike ride. Carol arrived on her bike to promote the cause and speak with community members at the park. Canned and dry food goods were also collected by Sunset on the Square and the Utah Nonprofits Association at the event to donate to the new expanded pantry at Switchpoint. BreakingtheCycles.org is dedicated to raising awareness of homelessness in America and helping families, veterans and individuals break out of the cycle of homelessness.

Sunset on the Square 2The City of St. George was on hand to promote their anti-texting while driving campaigns. Several prizes were given away, including a dinner at Pizza Factory and a family pass for Fiesta Family Fun Center. The featured movie for the concluding evening was “The Legend of Zorro” starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Sunset on the Square had a very successful season with only one of the seven events having to be cancelled due to weather. Despite high temperatures at some of the mid-summer festivities, a great turnout was seen at all of the events, as families came out to enjoy the fun activities and a great selection of movies ranging from cartoons to classic favorites.

“This has been another incredible year for Sunset on the Square,” said Dawn McLain, owner of Write It Up! and Sunset on the Square event coordinator.
