Art patrons, artists, students, tourists, and area residents have seen the photos of the Southern Utah Museum of Art’s ever-evolving construction site at SUU that are appearing throughout social media and other venues. As steel girders begin supporting roofing elements and floors are laid, the physical elements of the museum are taking shape. Behind the scenes, the museum’s staff is also taking shape. However, the Southern Utah Museum of Art is still currently seeking volunteers.
The museum’s organizational structure is being designed and developed. Beyond the professional staff and arts administration graduate students and museum studies undergraduate students, a vital component of the Southern Utah Museum of Art will be its corps of volunteers. These volunteers will serve in a variety of capacities, including as docents, cataloguers, frame restorers, gift shop staffers, and general volunteers. These remarkable individuals will ensure that SUMA fulfills its potential as a cultural destination in southern Utah.
Roland Gow, SUMA volunteer coordinator, is pleased to announce a call for volunteers to fulfill the museum’s needs. Individuals able to commit to an average of four hours per week for one year may consider volunteering. There will be proper training sessions for all areas of SUMA prior to its opening in summer 2016. Training is expected to commence in early 2016. Prospective volunteers may email shepherdenv@msn.com or call (435) 865-5825. To review the application or print out a copy, please visit suu.edu/pva/suma/volunteer.html.
Volunteers will be the backbone of SUMA and will fill many of SUMA’s functions and needs. Help enrich your community and university as well as visitors to southern Utah by volunteering at SUMA.
