Tuacahn high school auditionsThe Independent

Tuacahn High School announced recently that it is changing its application process for new students grades 9-12 wanting to enroll for fall 2015. As has been the case in the past, any student wanting to attend Tuacahn High School for the Preforming Arts can fill out the enrollment application and enter the lottery based system from which new students are selected each year. However, beginning this fall for new students applying, the application process will now include an ‘audition component’ that will help place students in their chosen academy when selected in the lottery.

Principal Rosanna Weeks commented, “The new audition piece to the application process is meant to encourage only students who are interested in pursuing an educational experience at a performing arts school to apply.”  Principal Weeks continued, “This is an experiment for us to target students who really want to come here.”

Every student who completes the new application process will be entered into the lottery and will have an equal chance to be selected.

“This will always be a lottery school and any student can still apply. They will just now have to include an audition as part of the process,” said Weeks.

The audition may be completed virtually using a variety of online resources when potential students are unable to travel to THS for the audition.

Ryan Anderson, Vice Principal, stated, “If a student has a strong desire to attend Tuacahn, this new process will only enhance their experience and increase the likelihood of a successful high school career at THS.”

The 2015 fall application deadline is February 5. There are openings in all grades 9-12. A second lottery will be held in the first week of April as needed. Students should still apply if they miss the February 6 deadline.

Another positive change is the Sun Tran bus system will begin providing transportation to Ivins. With the boarding location at Sunset Corner on Sunset Boulevard in St. George, Sun Tran will make frequent trips to Tuacahn throughout the day.

Principal Weeks said, “Our school is successful largely due to carpools and this new option in new transportation will ease the burden on those carpooling.”

Weeks concluded, “We are excited about the new changes.  We want to raise the bar for our school for the benefit of the students who go here.”
