2022’s Most Widely Read Columns
– By Howard Sierer –
Here’s a quick summary of some of my most widely read columns of 2022.
An Alternative for Utah’s Disappearing Coal Mining Jobs
Coal mining is a slowly dying industry and with it, jobs for coal miners are disappearing. There is a solution, a win for Utah’s coal country, a win for reliable base-load, always-on power generation and a win for the environment. The Blue Castle Project is a proposed nuclear power plant near Green River in Emery County, Utah.
Biden is Worse than Jimmie Carter
Jimmie Carter is frequently ranked as the worst president of the last 90 years; Biden is demonstrably worse. That comparison has been popping up even on progressive media like CNN. This month’s respected Quinnipiac Poll shows that only 33% of Americans approve of Biden’s job performance, the lowest percentage on record.
Utah Teachers Unions Versus Concerned Parents
Since parents are responsible for raising children, parents should be given an opportunity to review and make recommendations on school curricula before they are finalized. SB114 would require involving parents on the front-end of the curriculum selection process and would allow them to make recommendations to their local school board. The Utah chapter of the AFT opposes SB114.
Pro-Choice Legal Scholars: Roe v Wade Isn’t Constitutional
Legal scholars, including most who are resolutely pro-choice, agree that the 1972 Supreme Court Roe v Wade abortion decision has no Constitutional basis. Instead, Justice Harry Blackmun invented a “right to privacy,” unmentioned in the Constitution.
Biden Wants High Gasoline Prices
The Biden administration is creating massive energy insecurity in the U.S. and taking the rest of the world with us. No matter what one believes about the connection between climate change and burning fossil fuels, it’s madness to intentionally and prematurely create the highest gasoline prices on record when electric cars are far from ready for prime time.
Black Lives Matters Falls from Grace
Since reaching the pinnacle of national attention and influence in the summer of 2020, it’s been all downhill with BLM falling from grace into scandal. Awash with corporate funding and no longer as welcome in liberal circles, BLM has been exposed for grievously misusing its funds.
Utah, ESG and Progressives Threat to Democracy
Progressives’ siren song of using “environmental, social and governance” (ESG) criteria to evaluate businesses requires overlooking all of ESG’s numerous warts. A letter from the State of Utah and all of its elected federal office holders states that “we view this newfound focus on ESG as politicizing the ratings process.”
Media Falls for a Fake Utah Racism Claim
Media outlets nationwide fell for a bogus claim of racial discrimination at BYU. It was picked up without questioning by CNN, NPR, ABC, NBC, the New York Times and the Washington Post. Yet the entire story was a lie.
I’ll Skip Voting for Utah’s U.S. Senate Seat
As a moderate conservative who recognizes that political solutions for today’s challenges require compromise and balance, I’m between a rock and a hard place with Utah’s 2022 U.S. Senate race. Sen. Mike Lee shut down the government for 16 days in October 2013. Evan McMullin ran for president as an independent in 2016 and now is running for the U.S. Senate with full support from the Democratic Party.
