A Weekend of Performance, Thought, And Music Comes To Springdale

February 16: Humans, The Humanities, and the Written Word with Laura Tohe and Laura Pritchett.
February 17: Chaos Theory with Craig Childs and Greg Istock.

Zion Canyon Mesa presents two evenings of lectures and performances in conjunction with the annual Torrey House Press “Voices for the West” writing workshop.

On Friday, February 16, novelist Laura Pritchett, with her sixth novel, “Playing with Wildfire,” due out this month, joins Navajo Nation Poet Laureate Laura Tohe to explore “Humans, The Humanities, and the Written Word.” How do the humanities affect our lives? How should they, especially in these times when the very nature of a liberal arts education is under fire?

Laura Pritchett — “But our dreams can’t live in that city. Where are they, our dreams?”
Laura Tohe — “We will sing you back to your relatives, sing you back to the places you once walked, and return you to the stars.”

On Saturday night, storyteller and writer extraordinaire Craig Childs and virtuoso musician Greg Istock continue their remarkable partnership to plumb the depths of “Chaos Theory.”  When asked what to expect, Greg replied, “We performed this twice to sold-out crowds in Colorado, and each night was different. All I can tell you is I’m as curious and primed for what will unfold as you are.” Childs continued, “There are so many of us now that we threaten to devour the world with our touching, starting with the things we adore most. At the same time, we obviously yearn for contact, and I fear what would happen if we were cut off from a distinctive, on-the-ground relationship with the past.”
