The Stage Door is bringing a dynamic blend of laughter and poignant storytelling to downtown St. George this season with two major productions at The Electric Theater. Audiences can look forward to an upcoming slate that ranges from a fast-paced period comedy to a contemporary, award-winning musical exploring the complexities of modern connection.
The season begins with Sandy Rustin’s hilarious romantic farce, The Cottage, which runs from July 30 through August 15. Directed by Josh Scott and stage managed by Cairo Haynes, this Noël Coward-inspired comedy of manners is set in the countryside of 1923 England. The plot centers on Sylvia Van Kipness, who sets off a domino effect of scandalous revelations after sending a telegram that exposes her year-long affair with a man named Beau. The ensuing chaos involves uninvited spouses and tangled lovers in a witty exploration of marriage and fate. The talented cast features Ginger Nelson as Sylvia, Michael Lee as Beau, and Anna Beck as Marjorie, with Gwen Scott serving as the understudy. Timothy Merkley, Sloane Saunders, and Chad Calmelat round out the ensemble as Clarke, Diedre, and Richard.
Following the comedy, the theater transitions to a deeply moving contemporary production with the Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen, running from September 24 through October 10. With a book by Steven Levenson and a renowned score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the production explores critical themes of connection, belonging, and youth mental health. Directed by Jalee Scott with music direction by Celeste Dixon, the story follows Evan Hansen, an isolated high school student who finds himself at the center of a rapidly evolving fabrication following a local tragedy. As the lie grows, Evan is forced to confront the true cost of his desire to belong.
Director Jalee Scott noted that at its heart, the play is a story about the universal human need for connection, and expressed that the company is honored to bring such a powerful story to the St. George community. All performances for both productions are held on Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 PM. Matinee performances are also available, with The Cottage offering a show on August 1 at 2 PM and Dear Evan Hansen featuring a matinee on October 3 at 2 PM.
