Annual Arbor Day Celebration In St. George April 27th
The City of St. George Invites The Community To Join In Replenishing ‘Urban Forest’ During the Annual Arbor Day Celebration on April 27th, 2024.
Picture a warm, sunny day, the smell of fresh air, and the calm of natural beauty surrounding you. Then imagine that sensation intensified as you join community members in planting trees along the Virgin River North Trail as part of the City of St. George’s annual Arbor Day Celebration on April 27 from 9 AM to 11 AM.
The event will begin in the parking lot of the Doctors’ Volunteer Clinic (1036 E Riverside Drive) as participants make their way to the adjacent Virgin River North Trail to begin planting trees. There is no cost to attend.
“There is no feeling like planting a tree to help replenish our urban forest, so we urge you to take advantage of this great opportunity to make a difference,” said Shane Moore, Director of the City of St. George’s Parks and Community Services Department. “The outdoors is a big reason why people choose to live and work in St. George. I am frequently asked by community members how they can give back. Well, a great way for anyone to get involved is to join us on April 27.”
The Arbor Day Celebration is an annual collaboration between the City of St. George, the Shade Tree Board and Star Nursery. Breakfast will be served to volunteers, and crafts and games will be available for children. There will also be shrubbery giveaways. Those planning to participate are asked to bring a pair of gardening gloves.
Arbor Day is a 152-year-old celebration observed worldwide, with the intent of replenishing the earth with one of its best resources. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in one year a mature tree will absorb more than 48 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen in exchange.
In St. George’s desert climate, trees are vital for cooling as they mitigate the heat during the hot summer months. Planting more trees leads to cooler environments as they not only provide shade but release water vapor through transpiration, offering a sustainable approach to reducing heat.
“Trees have a multitude of benefits for people, wildlife and the environment,” Moore added. “Our Arbor Day Celebration provides a chance for community members to give back while having fun.”
