The 2nd Annual Dragon’s Tail Stair Climb Challenge returns to St. George this January, offering runners and walkers one of the most physically demanding and unique race experiences in Southern Utah. Set on the Tech Ridge Staircase, the event challenges participants to descend and climb a brutal set of 333 stairs, repeating the effort across multiple race formats designed to test speed, endurance, and grit.
Hosted at the Tech Ridge Staircase near Dixie Technical College, the Dragon’s Tail Stair Climb Challenge features three race categories: a 5K or 1K Run/Walk, the Sprint Challenge, and the Endurance Challenge. The staircase will be closed to non-participants during the races to ensure a safe and focused competition environment.

The 5K and 1K Run/Walk begin at 7:30 AM. The 5K course starts at the top of the Tech Ridge stairs, sends runners along the rim trail, down the steep Jerry Rice Trail, up Cloud Drive, back down Jerry Rice, and finishes with the demanding 333-step climb up the Dragon’s Tail staircase. The 1K, approximately .8 miles, starts at the top of the stairs, runs across the rim to the Temple Quarry parking lot, follows the bike path to the bottom of the staircase, and finishes with a climb to the top.
The Sprint Challenge begins at 9 AM and is run in heats, with the fastest overall time earning bragging rights and a special prize. At 10 AM, the Endurance Challenge pushes competitors to their limits, starting with five laps at 12 minutes per lap, with the time allowance decreasing by one minute every five laps. Racers descend and ascend the staircase for each lap, waiting for the next start time before continuing. Those who complete all 24 laps will race from the bottom to the top, with the fastest male and female crowned Dragon King and Dragon Queen.

A special Dragon’s Tail Slayer Challenge is available for participants who complete all three race categories, offering discounted registration and an exclusive award.
Packet pickup will take place January 17 at 7 AM at the top of the Dragon’s Tail staircase. All finishers of the first lap receive a finisher medal, with milestone charms awarded along the way. Strollers are not permitted.
More details, registration, and volunteer opportunities are available through the City of St. George events page.
