With opening weekend complete and paintings now filling the gallery walls, the Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA) 2026 National Exhibition & Sale, Heart of America, continues through July 6 at the historic Maynard Dixon Home & Studio in Mt. Carmel.
Hosted by the Thunderbird Foundation Gallery, the exhibition features more than 100 works by over 40 artists from across the country. The collection includes both studio paintings and plein air works, offering visitors an opportunity to see how artists interpret America’s landscapes through different approaches and techniques.
Opening weekend drew strong attendance, with nearly 30 PAPA Signature Members traveling to Southern Utah to participate in the exhibition and meet with collectors and visitors. The Patron Preview, Public Opening, and annual Wet Paint Sale introduced freshly completed works created on location, many of which are now displayed alongside the larger exhibition.
The Plein Air Painters of America organization is widely recognized for promoting excellence in outdoor painting, a tradition that emphasizes direct observation of light, color, and atmosphere. The exhibition reflects that commitment through landscapes representing diverse regions of the United States.
“We’re so excited to have over 30 of America’s finest painters coming to Mt. Carmel this year,” said gallery owner Susan Bingham. “We are pleased to be able to sponsor this beautiful show by nationally known artists.”
Bingham added, “We invite art lovers from everywhere to stop by while visiting the Zion and Bryce areas.”

A Historic Setting for Living Art
The exhibition is presented at the Maynard Dixon Home & Studio, one of the West’s most significant artistic landmarks. Located amid the landscapes that inspired many of Dixon’s most celebrated works, the property continues to serve as a gathering place for artists drawn to the region’s distinctive scenery and creative legacy.
Today, the Thunderbird Foundation’s stewardship of the historic site allows visitors to experience contemporary landscape painting in the same environment that inspired generations of Western artists.
Whether visiting Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, or exploring scenic Highway 89, the exhibition offers travelers an opportunity to experience nationally recognized artwork in an intimate and historic setting.
The Heart of America exhibition remains open through July 6 at the Thunderbird Foundation Gallery, located at the Historic Maynard Dixon Home & Studio, 2200 S. State St. (Hwy. 89) in Mt. Carmel.
