The City of St. George, in partnership with the Old Spanish Trail Association, will commemorate the enduring legacy of the explorers who forged the Old Spanish National Historic Trail nearly 200 years ago during a special event on June 30.
The celebration begins at 8 AM at Crosby Family Confluence Park, located at 2099 S. Convention Center Drive. A historical marker unveiling will take place adjacent to the foot bridge located on the Mayor’s Loop Trail. Everyone in the community is invited to attend and witness the recent installation of seven silhouettes depicting these early explorers.
Antonio Armijo was a Spanish-Mexican explorer and merchant who led an expedition between 1829 and 1830 to find a trade route between New Mexico and Los Angeles. His party of 60 men and 100 mules left New Mexico in November 1829 and passed through Washington County between December 16–24, 1829.
Following a short program, members from the Old Spanish Trail Association will be available to discuss the historical significance and relevance of the trail to St. George. Breakfast refreshments will also be served while supplies last. Come celebrate local history and the brave individuals who helped shape the region.
