The Stage Door is bringing a bit of high-society scandal to St. George this summer with its production of Sandy Rustin’s acclaimed romantic farce, The Cottage. Opening at The Electric Theater, this witty and fast-paced comedy promises an evening filled with laughter, secrets, and plenty of British banter.

Set in 1923 England, the story is a nod to the classic comedy of manners style of Noël Coward. The chaos begins when Sylvia Van Kipness decides to expose her year-long affair with Beau by sending a telegram to both her husband, Clarke, and Beau’s wife, Marjorie. When the unexpected spouses arrive at the countryside rendezvous, the situation spirals as it is revealed that Clarke and Marjorie have their own secrets. With shifting alliances, a prop porcupine, and a few unexpected weapons, the characters must navigate a web of betrayals to find a hilariously non-traditional resolution.

Directed by Josh Scott, the production features a talented lineup of local performers. Ginger Nelson and Michael Lee return to the summer comedy stage as Sylvia and Beau. They are joined by Anna Beck, Timothy Merkley, and Gwendolyn Scott, who previously worked together in Into the Woods. The cast also welcomes newcomers Sloane Saunders and Chad Calmelat to the St. George theatre scene.

Performances run for three consecutive weekends from July 30 through August 15. Evening shows are scheduled for 7:30 PM on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. There is also a special matinee performance at 2 PM on Saturday, August 1.

Because seating is limited and this hilarious production is expected to be popular, theatergoers are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance. You can find more information and secure your seats at stagedoorutah.com.
