Count My Vote leaders have delivered an official letter of withdrawal to Utah Lieutenant Governor Spencer Cox, formally concluding its statewide citizens’ initiative petition. The action follows sweeping election reforms achieved during the 2014 General Legislative Session that will improve voter participation in Utah.
Election reform in Utah was hard earned. It took the actions of Count My Vote’s thousands of volunteers, supporters and more than 115,000 registered voters to compel elected leaders to modernize the system and change the way they get elected.
The Utah Legislature passed and Governor Herbert signed Senate Bill 54. The new law creates a direct primary in Utah and allows Utah’s 650,000 unaffiliated voters to participate in the primary election of their choice.
Count My Vote celebrates these reforms and credits the efforts of its volunteers, supporters and signers for giving Utah election reform a voice that could not be ignored. This voice persuaded Utah lawmakers to listen and take action. As a result, Utah voters will have more choice, convenience and accountability. Voter participation will rise.
Count My Vote also appreciates Utah legislative leaders who supported these far-reaching election reforms.
Utah’s first direct, open primary will take place in June 2016. Count My Vote will continue to work to encourage participation and engagement in Utah elections, fulfilling its mission to enhance voter participation in Utah.
