A message from Cedar City Mayor Maile Wilson
I hope each of you had a nice (and more importantly, safe) Labor Day and were able to attend some of the events at the Iron County Fair. Each year, I look forward to the fair, and this year was no exception. The fair is an important part of this wonderful time of year! And with the new crispness in the air, another football season beginning, and school being back in session, it is apparent that fall is just around the corner! Typically, once school gets back in full swing, it seems like the activities around town tend to slow down. However, over the next month, things are just as busy as usual. Due to this, there are a few items I want to put on your radar.
On Sept. 5, Southern Utah University will host the “President’s Community Forum” at 6 p.m. in the Charles Hunter Room at the Hunter Conference Center. President Scott L. Wyatt will update the community on the state of the university going into this new school year as well as answer questions from the community. Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome.
Also, mark your calendars for Sept. 11 when John Michael Montgomery will be in concert here in Cedar City at 7 p.m. at the America First Event Center. Tickets are available at tbirdtickets.com. You can also visit the America First Event Center Ticket Office or call (435) 586-7872.
We are proud to announce that the Utah Debate Commission has chosen SUU to host the United States Senate debate between Mitt Romney and Jenny Wilson in the America First Events Arena Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. Admission is free, but a ticket is required. Tickets can be requested at utahdebatecommission.org/ticket-request. SUU and Cedar City will receive national exposure as the hosts of a U.S. Senate debate featuring a former presidential candidate. This event will be broadcast live to a national audience on CSPAN and statewide on Utah radio and television network affiliates. Pretty exciting stuff!
The first annual Cedar Music Fest will take place in downtown Cedar City Sept. 15, featuring a night of music, art, food, fun, and dancing. The event will be from 6 to 10 p.m. on University Boulevard between Main Street and 100 W.
Performing at the first annual Cedar Music Fest will be two bands from Seattle and two from southern Utah, along with several other street performers. The event will also have food trucks, vendors, and a photo booth, so why not bring your family and make a night of it?
Bryan John Appleby is a singer/songwriter making his way to Cedar City from Seattle, along with the band Tomten. Local bands Kinetic from Cedar City and Halogyns from St. George are also scheduled to play.
Cedar Music Fest is a designed to serve as a cultural reflection of the Cedar City community and to increase patronage at downtown businesses. Additionally, the event includes components dedicated to promoting local artists and performers, drawing tourism, and bringing added culture to the historic downtown.

It’s time to start preparing for the annual Cedar City Hospital Health Fair Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon inside Cedar City Hospital. There will also be a Red Cross Blood Drive at the Health Fair from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. downstairs in the hospital’s Northfield Conference Room. The Southwest Utah Public Health Department is offering its all-important Flu Shoot Out at this event. The health fair just keeps getting bigger and better with all the important health screenings and information being offered, as we always have done, along with some exciting new booths and free neck and head massages this year from Healing Mountain. The Sons of the Utah Pioneers will hold its National Encampment (aka convention) right here in Cedar City Sept. 20–22. What makes this event even more special is that this is the first time since 2000 that the National Encampment has been held in Cedar City. Approximately 300 members from the Sons of the Utah Pioneers chapters throughout Utah and chapters in Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, California, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and other locations not organized into chapters will come to our beautiful community for this event. As our community continues to grow, there is a need to plan alternative traffic routes. Therefore, in conjunction with the county, state, and local municipal governments, Cedar City is engaged in an effort to plan a west belt route. This effort has progressed to the point where there are a couple of alternative routes that are being considered, and we are seeking the public’s input before a decision is made on the final alignment(s). It is an exciting time to be a part of Cedar City’s tech community! Cedar City, along with other communities across Utah, was recently invited to form its own chapter under the Silicon Slopes Utah brand. This promising opportunity gives local entrepreneurs, early-stage startups, and the best and brightest in our community a chance to amplify the Cedar City tech brand to a network of over 50,000 tech professionals across the world.
With chapters in almost every region, Silicon Slopes is a statewide organization and the hub of Utah’s startup scene. The Silicon Slopes brand originated along the Wasatch Front where Utah’s burgeoning tech sector attracted Silicon Valley insiders, earning it the mountain-related moniker of Silicon Slopes. With the recent national audience taking note, it seeks to unite Utah’s tech brand for better exposure. As a nonprofit, its mission is to empower Utah’s tech community to learn, connect, and serve. Other organizational goals include closing the skill gap, supporting K–12 computer science, and building Utah’s workforce with a robust tech talent pipeline.
The Cedar City Silicon Slopes chapter is currently in the process of setting up a committee that will include entrepreneurs and city leaders as well as representatives from SUU and Southwest Technical College. This committee will oversee an operations team that will assist with writing weekly articles, gathering content, and sponsoring events that will spotlight the many tech innovations happening right here in Cedar City.
