The 32nd edition of the Huntsman World Senior Games will welcome an anticipated 18,000 visitors from all 50 states and 30 countries to St. George area between Oct. 8 and 20.

“For more than three decades the games has been fostering worldwide peace, health, and friendship,” said Huntsman World Senior Games CEO Kyle M. Case. “It’s part of what has helped the annual event grow into the largest multi-sport event in the world for athletes age 50 and better.”

The size and scope of the event infuses a large chunk of money into the region. Case said last year’s event bolstered the economy by an estimated $17 million. A similar economic impact is expected this year.

“On so many levels, the Huntsman World Senior Games is a valuable asset to our community,” said Kevin Lewis, director of the St. George Tourism Office. “From the marvel of the athletic skill and competition, to the athletes’ commitment to an active and healthy lifestyle and finally the significant and much appreciated financial windfall, the games is important to our region and part of the fabric of who we are as a city and county.”

Two large-scale events dominate the fortnight of activities. On Oct. 9 at 7 p.m., the Huntsman World Senior Games will officially welcome the athletes at the opening ceremonies. This banner evening will feature a parade of athletes, singing, dancing, and a large-scale fireworks display. The free show is open to the public and takes place at the DSU stadium. Hall of Fame speaker and major contributor to the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series Dan Clark will give the keynote address. Gates open at 6 p.m.

Then on Oct. 16, the Huntsman World Senior Games hosts a free concert and celebration at 7 p.m. inside Burns Arena, featuring The Famous Unknowns. This upbeat, feel-good concert will cover musical favorites from the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. The community is invited to attend.

“The games is a total experience,” Case added. “We know that athletes can play their sports at home, so when they come to the games, we want to give them something special. We provide social and entertainment opportunities throughout the entire event and the great thing is that the community is invited to take part in much of the fun as well.”
