Orchestra of Southern Utah announces 2019–20 season
By Tanisa Crosby
This year marks 30 years with the Orchestra of Southern Utah as an independent organization. To celebrate this achievement, the orchestra celebrates origin-themed concerts and robust and celebratory pieces.
The orchestra’s first concert will take place Oct. 10. Carylee Zwang will conduct a variety of pieces that have been used to tell favorite stories, such as “Alice in Wonderland,” “Theme from ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’,” “Huckleberry Finn,” and Ravel’s “Mother Goose Suite.”
On Nov. 7, the orchestra will perform Bruch’s “Romance,” “Tara’s Theme” from “Gone with the Wind,” Liszt’s “Symphonic Poem No. 1,” and select movements from Prokofievs’ “Romeo and Juliet” directed by guest conductor Jianan Yan.
A long-running tradition in December is Handel’s “Messiah,” which will be performed Dec. 8 and 9. This concert is free to the public.
On Feb. 15, the Children’s Jubilee concert will include performances of “Cowboy Overture” by John Williams, “Overture to Oklahoma,” and Copland’s “Rodeo.” The following concert on Feb. 20 will also include “Grand Canyon Suite.”
On April 9, the orchestra will perform Mozart’s “Overture to The Abduction from the Seraglio,” Haydn’s Farewell Symphony, and Dvorak’s “Slavonic Dance.”
