St. George Marathon Volunteers
Volunteering isn’t just about giving back; it’s about connections and community. For longtime volunteer Susi Lafaele, the joy of volunteering goes beyond helping at aid stations.

Volunteer Opportunities Are Yours At This Year’s St. George Marathon

Volunteers are the indispensable heart and soul of the St. George Marathon, and you are needed at this year’s event.

The St. George Marathon has been a community tradition since its inception in 1977. The race has attracted thousands of runners from across the United States and around the globe due to its fast course, qualification opportunities for the Boston Marathon, stunning scenery and nearly perfect October weather.

Yet equally as crucial to the Marathon’s success is the amazing quality of its enthusiastic volunteers, who serve as the indispensable soul of the City’s signature event.

“Every year the participants of the race are amazed by the volunteers,” said Michelle Graves, Assistant Parks and Communication Services Director. “Our volunteers are upbeat and friendly, making it a great experience for everyone. You don’t need any experience to volunteer — just a positive attitude!”

Scheduled for October 5, 2024, the St. George Marathon, presented by Intermountain Health, relies on about 2,500 volunteers. These volunteers are crucial to the event’s success. They help with tasks such as: distributing race packets, staffing aid stations, handing out medals, retrieving clothing and much more.

Volunteering isn’t just about giving back; it’s about connections and community. For longtime volunteer Susi Lafaele, the joy of volunteering goes beyond helping at aid stations. It’s the shared experiences and friendships developed that keep her coming back year after year.

“One of my favorite things is to look for my cousin from Mapleton who runs every year; or Pastor Ralph Clingan of the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, who has finished 16 St. George Marathons; or cheering on local running legend Aaron Metler as he seeks to win another marathon,” said Lafaele, a St. George resident who usually tends the aid station at mile marker 23 near the Chuckwalla Trail. “I love seeing those who, even grimacing in pain, are proud that they’ve made it this far. For me, volunteering has become more than just a tradition, it’s a family event.”
