All Aboard! Tiny Trains Return To Kanab, Utah

January 17-18, 2025.

The annual Kanab Train Show brings together kids and adults, fans and hobbyists, and buyers and sellers of trains to town.

Now in its tenth year, the Show is held in the Kanab Center convention hall right across from the historic Perry Lodge. Wandering between the large ballroom and adjacent expo hall, visitors will enjoy at least a dozen operating model railroad displays. “Each year, we have clubs and individuals showing virtually every size of model and toy train out there, from tiny N scale to the classic Lionel trains that many people grew up with under their Christmas trees. We’ll also have the larger Garden scale trains that are popular for outdoor railways and even Lionel Standard Gauge that was popular before World War II,” says Robert Lacey, the show’s organizer. “Kids love our scavenger hunt that helps them explore all of the different things there are to see on these operating displays.”

A highlight, among the many different displays, is the very large layout hosted by the Utah Freemo-N Club. It features a collaboration of modelers from as far away as southern California who combine forces to build a railroad empire covering 3600 square feet. Free-mo is a modular scale railroading standard designed for individual modelers’ that specifies bench work, track work, scenery and digital control intended to raise-the-bar for scale modular railroading in general and, in this case, for N scale modular railroading.

There will be several model train and local food vendors plus information from several area tourist railroads. These railroads have donated tickets and other items that will be used for door prizes and as auction items to help fund next year’s show. There will be lots of railroad-related things to enjoy for kids and adults alike.
