Letter to the editor: Allen Davis for Washington County Commissioner

My name is Allen Davis. I am running for Washington County Commissioner, and I would like to tell you a little about me and why I should be your next county commissioner.

I grew up in Ogden. I accepted a job with the city of St. George power department almost 30 years ago. I have served many of the citizens of St. George, restoring power to them on stormy nights and hot summer afternoons.

I am married and have two children. I have a 15-year-old son and a 17-year-old daughter. I live in Winchester Hills and am the current board president of the Winchester Hills Water Company.

Issues that face Washington County like the Lake Powell Pipeline, the water conservancy district, competitive healthcare, and rural Washington County need a voice.

We feel that the conservancy district is not a conservancy district for the whole county, and we don’t feel represented. But we are taxed at the same rate as someone who lives in a municipality that receives a lot of benefit from them, and we in the county just get taxed. We don’t even have a elected representative on the board of the conservancy district.

Another issue is health care. IHC is a good company. They save lives everyday, but I have never seen a situation that didn’t benefit from competition, including this one. It would make IHC a better healthcare corporation and benefit the citizens of Washington County with lower costs and better service and a choice of which healthcare company we receive it from.

The next item would be transportation. We need the Northern Corridor.

Public lands are another issue that effect the citizens of Washington County. We have more wilderness in Washington County than any other county in America our size. And then you add onto that the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve and there is a lot of Washington County that is locked up. We need to stop that trend and to have our federal lands better managed by the federal government.

There are wild horse issues in Washington County, forest mismanagement on Pine Valley Mountain that has the potential to exceed the damaged caused by the Brian Head fire if not properly managed.

There are a lot of issues facing Washington County’s future. We have an election coming up June 26 that will likely decide who the next county commissioner will be. It is likely that less than 20 percent of the population will vote in that primary.

There a lot other issues. For a more complete response to the issues, you can look on my website, electdavis2018.com. You can also find a way to contact me on the website if you have any questions, but the most important thing is for you to vote June 26.

Thanks,

Allen Davis
