“Stryder” is the eye-catching work of Doug Adams. Using entirely recycled materials for the sculpture, Adams has masterfully created a magnificent piece available for view in the Art Around the Corner exhibit in downtown St. George.

Adams’ 30-year career in the steel industry has significantly influenced and shaped his artistic endeavors. He utilizes his experience and training, applying many of the same techniques and processes learned during his career in the steel mill. Yet it goes beyond this for Adams. His passion for providing purpose and utilizing what might otherwise be wasted is demonstrated in his work.

“We live in such a disposable society,” Adams said. “My hope is to inspire others, through my art, to reconsider what is disposable and what can take on new life.”

Discarded items that might otherwise end up in junkyards or landfills are paired together and transformed into eye-pleasing and spirit-moving works of art. Adding stone to the crafted steel shapes is another method employed by Adams. Many Asian cultures consider the combination of stone and steel to be good fortune.

“I think we could all use more good fortune these days,” said Adams.

Art runs through the Adams home. Many of Adams’ pieces also incorporates fused glass from recycled bottles. The stunning glass adds color-popping appeal subtly blended within the sculpture. The gemstone-like glass comes from the creations of his wife, artist Dianne Adams.

The unique pieces Adams transforms from discarded items into treasured works of beauty are remarkable. His art stands boldly yet blends well into the environments for which it’s created. Whether displayed outdoors or indoors, Adams’ work is easily at home.

“Stryder” can be found on display in front of the St. George Tabernacle as part of the downtown Art Around the Corner outdoor exhibit.

  1. His art is uniquely and beautifully designed. I saw some smaller pieces in an art gallery in Springdale and knew exactly who the artist was without even needing to read the descriptions. Beautiful work!
