Art in Kayenta offers a full weekend of family fun
By Jan Broberg
Every fall for the past 18 years, thousands of people have made their way to Art in Kayenta, a three-day art festival in Ivins. There are lots of reasons to attend Oct. 11 and 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For art lovers, it’s being able to wind their way through booth after booth and gallery after gallery of unique original art and wares. For others, it’s relaxing in the beer and wine garden, sipping wine and savoring fresh food from local vendors; others opt for the tasty entrées Xetava Gardens Cafe serves up. But for many, it’s enough just to enjoy the gorgeous weather and stunning red-rock scenery. The wine and beer garden will be open Oct. 11 and 12 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
One-of-a-kind creations from over 40 juried, regional, and national artists who specialize in media ranging from sculpture to painting, jewelry to ceramics, wood to metal, and more will be on display. Each year, artists participate in a silent auction featuring their fabulous creations. Festival attendees will have the exclusive opportunity to bid on — and hopefully win — selected art pieces. The auction is hosted by the Kayenta Arts Foundation with proceeds benefiting the beautiful Center for the Arts at Kayenta theater.
Art in Kayenta is sponsored by the Kayenta Arts Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting diverse arts in the region. As a collaborative arts community venue, the Center hosts a broad range of performing arts, plays, lectures, films, concerts, and educational opportunities for the Southern Utah area.
Take in nightly shows, concerts and events through September and October at the Center for the Arts at Kayenta.
Cello Rendezvous
Have you ever heard a choir of cellists perform together? The sound is powerful, sonorous, and soulful, unlike anything you’ve heard. Join us Oct. 12 for Cello Rendezvous: An Evening of Beautiful Cello Ensemble Music, a delightful program played by over 20 cellists from the Cello Society of Southern Utah.
“La Boheme”
On Oct. 9 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Center Theater, world-class performers will give southwestern Utah a Broadway-caliber theater experience at a fraction of the cost.
“‘La Boheme’ is definitely the first opera you should see,” said David Sauer, general director of St. George Opera and opera tenor. “Because ‘La Boheme’ shows off what opera is all about — passion — expressed through moving melodies, a compelling story, striking costumes, and dazzling sets. The music of ‘La Boheme’ is some of the most beautiful and famous ever written, and the plot is captivating.”
Master magician and mentalist Paul Draper
On Oct. 12 at 7:30 at the Center Theater, be astounded, entertained, and educated. Paul Draper is coming to the Center For the Arts at Kayenta from his world tour and will most definitely be unforgettable. You are certain to see more with your eyes closed than you could imagine in Mysteries of the Mind.
