The Kayenta Arts Foundation and DSU’s theater department will present a stage reading of Charles Mee’s dark comedy “Global Warming,” performed by Varlo Davenport, Richard Hill, and advanced acting students from DSU’s theater department. The reading is directed by Kathryn Syssoyeva and will take place Oct. 11 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Center for the Arts at Kayenta’s Lorraine Boccardo Theater. It will be preceded by a presentation on the playwright and the play and followed by a conversation between the audience, the cast, and Syssoyeva about the themes of the plays and their relevance.
Mee is the recipient of two Obie awards and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Not a political play in the usual sense, “Global Warming” emerges from his belief “that human beings … are the product not just of psychology, but also of history and of culture, that we often express our histories and cultures in ways even we are not conscious of, that the culture speaks through us, grabs us and throws us to the ground, cries out, silences us.”
“Global Warming” involves vulgar or obscene language and themes. Admission is on a donation basis. All donations support the Center for the Arts at Kayenta.
