The Center for the Arts at Kayenta is proud to present the thought-provoking and critically acclaimed play, “What the Constitution Means to Me,” written by Heidi Schreck and directed by Zoe Aja Moore. This powerful and timely production will grace our stage, offering audiences an opportunity to engage with important themes of democracy, women’s rights, and the Constitution’s impact on our lives.

This boundary-breaking play, which garnered widespread acclaim on Broadway and beyond, is a tour de force written by the brilliant Heidi Schreck. “What the Constitution Means to Me” is a deeply personal exploration of the U.S. Constitution and its effects on generations of American women. Fifteen-year-old Heidi earned her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions across the United States.In this production she resurrects her teenage self in order to trace the profound relationship between four generations of women and the Bill of Rights.

The production skillfully blends humor, insight, and a heartfelt narrative to engage audiences in a profound conversation about the document that forms the backbone of our nation.

Zoe Aja Moore (Director) is an artist and director who uses experimental and rigorous theatrical practices to make performance, theater, opera, and participatory events. Her work has been presented in New York, Los Angeles, nationally and internationally by The Tank, The Ohio Theater, Williamstown Theater Festival, The Theater at the Ace Hotel, Bootleg THeater, The LAX Festival, REDCAT, home LA, Los Angeles Road Concerts, Ltd los angeles, Automata, National Sawdust, Studio Teatrgaleria, Warsaw, CalArts’ Center for New Performance, HERE Art Center, Prototype Festival, Long Beach Opera, The Ford, SFMOMA, National Gallery of Singapore, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and LACMA among others. Zoe has taught and guest directed at University of Michigan SMTD, NYU Stella Adler, CalState Dominiquez Hills, Shanghai Theater Academy, and teaches regularly at CalArts. Originally from New

York City, Zoe is a member of the Lincoln Center Director’s Lab and holds an MFA in Directing from the California Institute of the Arts.

Brandon Bruce (Legionnaire) is an award-winning actor, director, fight choreographer, and playwright who has worked with theaters across the country. Currently an Assistant Professor of Directing and Playwriting at UTU, Brandon previously served as Artistic Director of the Birmingham Children’s Theatre, Colonial Williamsburg’s Theatrical Programming, as well as Chicago’s Strawdog and BackStage Theaters. As an actor, Brandon has performed with such theaters as Park Square Theatre, Cleveland Play House, Richmond Shakespeare, Iowa Rep, SimonFest, Six Points Theatre, Signal Ensemble, and Porthouse Theatre. Brandon is a proud member of Actors’ Equity.

Jenny Greer (Heidi) is an actor, educator, and voice and speech coach. She’s performed around the country in classical and contemporary plays, musicals, experimental and devised theatre. She’s worked in film, television, commercials, and voiceover. She has taught at CalArts, AMDA College of the performing arts, and Los Angeles City College Extension. She has an MFA from California Institute of the Arts and BFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Mercedes Murguia (Debater) is a classically trained actress, receiving her BS in theatre from Utah Tech University! She’s appeared in over a dozen films, a dozen stage productions, commercials, and won several awards for her craft. Mercedes loves acting in all its forms for the connections it creates with the audience, cast, and crew. Mercedes is excited to be back at Kayenta and sharing this story with you.
