Christopher Norment lectures on Inyo Mountains salamander

A handful of rugged canyons in a single arid mountain range near Death Valley are home to the Inyo Mountains salamander (Batrachoseps campi), one of only two salamander species whose range occurs entirely within desert habitat. On Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m., Dr. Christopher Norment will describe the ecology and evolutionary history of the Inyo Mountains salamander, some current risks to its persistence, and his adventures while conducting research in often challenging and isolated terrain. He will also use his experiences with the Inyo Mountains salamander to explore how both love and science can “call us to the things of this world.” The lecture will be given at the Canyon Community Center in Springdale.

Norment is a vertebrate ecologist whose research interests include amphibians, birds, and mammals. He has conducted scientific research in Australia, Alaska, arctic Canada, and the mountains and deserts of the American West. He also has written four books of creative nonfiction, most recently “Relics of a Beautiful Sea: Survival, Extinction, and Conservation in a Desert World.” Norment lives in western New York and is a professor of environmental science and ecology at the College at Brockport, State University of New York.

The Fern and J. L. Crawford Lecture Series is a collaborative presentation of Zion Natl Park Forever Project and the Division of Resource Management in Zion National Park. Lectures are hosted monthly and are free and open to the public. Canyon Community Center is located at 126 Lion Blvd. in Springdale.
