Davis County Community Film Project “Before Your Time” comes to St. George Megaplex

Here’s a thrifty, likable, family-oriented motion picture experience that beautifully exemplifies the enduring power of teamwork and the unshakable spirit of community.

After the loss of their mother, 17-year-old Dylan, his two sisters, and his father are forced to move back to the small town where Dylan’s parents met and grew up. While getting back on their feet, the family stays with their eccentric Aunt Norah and tries to adjust to a new life. They meet a quirky neighborhood kid, Pete, who convinces them to embark on a “bucket list” adventure inspired by a list found in their Dad’s high school storage boxes. The task is not as easy as it seems and ultimately teaches everyone about managing grief, moving forward, and the importance of family.

As most readers are already well aware, southern Utah is filled with a wide range of gifted storytellers. With locally made feature films like “Maven Baxter,” “Lay Me Down to Sleep,” “Half Breed,” a new documentary about homeschooling, and countless other projects on the horizon, let it be known that aspiring and seasoned filmmakers alike should never underestimate the passion and work ethic of friends and community when setting out to do something as daunting as making a feature-length movie.

Davis County Community Film Project "Before Your Time" opens in St. George, Cedar CityWriter and director Lucas James McGraw and the fine folks of Davis County set out to prove this theory in the form of the new feature, “Before Your Time.” Made as a community film project over the course of a few years, this music-tinged family drama is now complete and about to embark on an exclusive Megaplex Theaters run.

“Before Your Time” will open in St. George and Cedar City Aug. 31 with Salt Lake City-based Megaplex Theaters  hosting screenings shortly thereafter. What then? Well, hopefully, strong word of mouth will carry this already buzzed-about movie to multiple cities throughout the country.

On the story level, “Before Your Time” looks to be inspirational for a handful of reasons. But this film will no doubt be particularly inspirational to filmmakers looking for new and viable ways to bring their stories to fruition.

Speaking of which, for those of you interested in learning more about the making of “Before Your Time,” you’re in luck. McGraw and select members of the cast and crew will be on hand for a Q&A at Pineview Stadium 10 in St. George Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. and in Cedar City Sept. 1 at 6:25 p.m.

Lend your support to the art of community filmmaking by attending a screening of “Before Your Time” in a theater. It’s the only way we’ll continue to see passionate efforts from storytellers whose work we might not get an opportunity to experience otherwise.
