The Rural Health Association of Utah recently gave the Educational Initiative to Improve Rural Health award to Dixie State University for enacting positive change in rural health within the community.
“It was an honor and a privilege for me to receive this award on behalf of President Richard ‘Biff’ Williams, the university, and the many people who have worked hard over the past several years to develop and manage programs designed to recruit students from rural areas into our health sciences program to prepare them for success,” said Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Michael Lacourse.
The association recognized DSU for increasing the number of students enrolled in its College of Health Sciences and making more opportunities available to these students.
“The dedication of the College of Health Sciences faculty made it possible for the university to receive this award from the Rural Health Association of Utah,” Williams said. “Thanks to their commitment, Dixie State University students have excellent certification and licensure exam pass rates, outstanding graduation rates, and high employments rates upon program completion. These accomplishments allow competent and caring healthcare professionals to reach those most in need of their services.”
The College of Health Sciences offers programs in certified nursing assistance, dental hygiene, emergency medical services, health and human performance, medical laboratory science, medical radiography, nursing, physical therapist assistance, phlebotomy, respiratory therapy, and surgical technology. Additionally, it features small class sizes in a facility on the Dixie Regional Medical Center campus.
“We look forward to working collaboratively with rural health scholars in the future as we expand our health sciences degree programs and look for opportunities to provide access to students from rural areas to those health sciences,” Lacourse said.
The Rural Health Association of Utah unites those with an interest in rural health care including health care workers, community members, students and academicians.
