Signing Off with Gratitude

– By James McFadden | Editor Emeritus –

As I sit down to write my final Editor’s Letter, I find myself reflecting on the journey that began back in March 2020 — just days before the world shut down. Taking on this challenge with The Independent during one of the most unpredictable times in modern history taught me more than I could have ever imagined, and it has provided me with an opportunity to discover what might be possible into the future.

Over these past five years, I’ve had the privilege of working with a team that exemplifies what collaboration and resilience truly mean. In a world where uncertainty seemed to dominate, our small but mighty crew continues to find ways to keep things moving — consistently, creatively, and with a spirit of support that made even the hardest deadlines feel lighter. I am endlessly grateful for the trust and camaraderie we built together. But don’t fret, you may just see a few things from me from time to time. I’m not done writing, that journey is just beginning.

Serving as editor during such a transformational time has also been a personal journey of growth. I’ve sharpened and found my voice as a writer, strengthened my instincts as a storyteller, and found new depth as a thought leader — all thanks to the countless conversations, projects, and partnerships I’ve had with incredible community leaders and promoters who all make Southern Utah such a vibrant place to call home.

This chapter may be coming to a close, but my appreciation for The Independent, its mission, and the community it serves will always remain. Thank you to everyone — colleagues, contributors, readers, and friends — who made this experience unforgettable.

Here’s to new beginnings and lasting connections.
